This paper presents the findings of a report examining the potential effects on health when women are denied access to abortion care for ideological or religious reasons. Three medical conditions of relevance to maternal health are reviewed: ectopic pregnancy, premature rupture of membranes, and gestational diabetes. Specifically it compares the generally accepted standard of care for these conditions with the care provided when abortion information and services are denied. Specific case studies are reviewed. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications for maternal health and ways to discuss this issue as a public health matter rather than a contest of moral claims.
