Over the past 30 – 40 years, environmental health responsibilities have become more fragmented and environmental public health activities have centered primarily on regulatory issues. To more clearly define and describe the role of environmental health, the CDC developed the essential environmental health services. The next step was to develop an instrument to complement the National Public Health Performance Standards by developing the Environmental Public Health Performance Standards. This presentation will focus on why the standards were developed and how they fit into the larger vision of improving environmental public health practice.

Learning Objectives:
1. Be able to list the three reasons for developing the National Environmental Public Health Performance Standards (NEnvPHPS). 2. Be able to describe the relationship between the NEnvPHPS and the National Public Health Performance Standards. 3. Describe three ways in which the NEnvPHPS can be used to improve the practice of environmental health at the local level.
