Although numerous studies have been conducted regarding hand sanitizing and disinfection in medical settings there exists a need to conduct more extensive studies within chiropractic healthcare settings. There has been one study completed at the Parker College of Chiropractic by Evans and Breshears (2007). These researchers gathered data via survey instruments and focus groups regarding attitudes and behaviors of chiropractic students about hand sanitizing and disinfecting treatment tables. In addition, a random number of treatment tables were swabbed and cultured that revealed microbial pathogens. With the large number of outpatients and students that flow through any given chiropractic clinic the risk of potential infection is problematic.

This current study will replicate the above study and add to the body of knowledge regarding the need for improved public health measures in chiropractic college clinics to reduce the potential spread of infections. The immediate goal of this study will be to engage interns in the importance of hand sanitizing and using proper disinfection techniques for cleaning treatment tables. The long-term goal is to continue replicating these types of studies throughout other chiropractic colleges. As a result, the intention is to create policies that will be implemented by the accrediting agency for all chiropractic colleges that will mandate these appropriate and cost effective procedures to improve outcomes related to public health and chiropractic practice.
