Violations of civil liberties and the consequences for public health

Profound violations of civil liberties and their constitutional mandates are continuing for the sixth year since the attacks of 2001 and the subsequent launch of the Bush administration's “war on terror.” Citizens and non-citizens alike may still be arbitrarily defined as “enemy conmbatants” and imprisoned indefinitely without due process, habeas corpus rights, or legitimate court review. Essentially warrantless wiretapping ,interception of emails and other communications, and other illegal searches continue, under the nominal supervision of a secret court. The use of torture in interrogations also continues, with the participation of some health professionals, and Congressional laws continue to be effectively revoked by presidential “signing statements.” The consequences for public health will be reviewed.
