Group 1: Intermediate-State CBPR Partnerships, Part I-- Using a case based on a community-higher education partnership in an Urban Research Center based in Detroit, MI, as well as the work done at CBPR training institutes coordinated by Community-Campus Partnerships for Health, participants will learn about common issues faced in intermediate-stage CBPR partnerships, and how to address these issues using a mix of strategies and approaches. Both didactic and participatory teaching methods will be used. Group 2: Beginning-Stage/Emerging CBPR Partnerships--Using a case based on a CBPR partnership in a low-income, biethnic, rural community in southern Colorado, participants will learn about common issues faced in beginning-stage/emerging CBPR partnerships, and how to address these issues using a mix of strategies and approaches. Both didactic and participatory teaching methods will be used.
Learning Objectives: Group 1: Describe strategies on how to establish and maintain trust; identify processes for making decisions and communicating effectively; balancing power, and understanding how conflicts can arise; and learn strategies for motivating, recognizing and celebrating partners.
Group 2: Describe effective strategies for identifying and selecting partners; determine how to work with partners to set priorities; and describe the rationale and effective strategies for establishing an organizational structure of board and staff, a mission statement, bylaws, principles and operating norms for a CBPR partnership, as well as other tools that can be used, such as Memorandum of Understanding.
