Advocacy is a key aspect of the mission of the Iowa Public Health Association (IPHA) and is one of the strategic directions identified in IPHA's strategic plan. In 2006/2007, IPHA created events to build the advocacy skills of its members and create forums for advocating for public health. IPHA Legislative Forum During the annual Legislative Forum advocates were addressed by the Director of the Iowa Department of Public Health, the Governor-Elect's Policy Advisor and a panel of Iowa legislators. The session allowed for an open question and answer period with the panel. Attendees also received a copy of IPHA's 2007 Advocacy Statements. The 2007 forum will educate members about Iowa's caucuses, available in every election township in January 2008. Participants will learn how to participate in the caucuses including writing resolutions (planks) for their party's platform and how to advocate for health promotion and disease prevention. IPHA Day on the Hill Advocacy training included: establishing effective working relationships with policy makers, identifying resources to support advocacy efforts, practical tips on communicating with legislators and resource materials. The group reconvened at the capitol to meet with legislators and voice support for public health issues. IPHA Collaboration with the Partnership for Better Health IPHA will collaborate to provide regional meetings and advocacy trainings. The meetings will: 1) focus on the cost of chronic disease; 2) educate on the importance of prevention, intervention and innovation to address these issues; and 3) develop a consistent advocacy message.

Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize need for affiliate-driven opportunities for advocacy training 2. Describe three venues for advocacy skill building 3. Discuss the value of partnerships in expanding public health advocacy opportunities
