Monday, November 5, 2007: 11:10 AM

Steven C. Macdonald, PhD, MPH , Office of Epidemiology, Washington State Department of Health, Olympia, WA
The International Health Regulations introduce the concept of "public health emergencies of international concern (PHEIC)," and are intended to enhance management of events-especially alert and response actions-and meet minimum core capacities in surveillance and response.

How will the IHRs affect states, which have their own independent laws and rules under our federal system of government?

Dr. Macdonald will discuss the anticipated implications of IHRs for the Washington state public health agency. Should Washington state modify its reportable disease rules? How should Washington state work with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists and CDC?

Learning Objectives:
Describe how IHRs may impact state and local public health agencies. Recognize the state impact of expanded requirements for reporting events and specific diseases under the IHRs. Recognize the impact of IHRs on case definitions.
