Joan Zorza, who has worked on behalf of battered women for over 30 years, will discuss the many types of family violence and address what types are most hurtful to its victims. She will examine what can predispose women to be abused, if they differ from other women, and why battered women may not leave. She will touch on what we know about abusers, why they do it, and if men who batterer differ from other men in our society. Ms. Zorza will address when victims are at greater danger, what can be done to keep battered women and their children safe, and bring about healing. She will propose what you can do to maximize their safety and healing. She will also caution about some approaches that have not proven helpful, or that are actually hurtful.

Learning Objectives:
Discuss the types of family violence and their impact on battered women. Examine abusers, and what we know about how and why they are abusive. 2. Describe what can be done to keep battered women and their children safe? Discuss your contribution to maximize the safety and healing of battered women.
