Biographical Sketch:
Bio Carla Wilson Carla Wilson teaches, trains, and studies the ancient art of Asian Medicine in a modern context. This includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition, counseling, health education, integrative medicine, exercise, and research methodology. She has 28 years of experience in the practice of acupuncture and Asian medicine, and presents and lectures at national acupuncture and public health conferences, international health events, state and local health departments, and at universities and colleges. Her educational background also includes a Master’s Degree in Health Education and Organizational Leadership. Ms. Wilson’s experience in research includes both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. She is currently a team member at the UCSF Mt. Zion Cancer Center and is engaged in a research project investigating the effects of Chinese herbal cream on human papilloma virus (HPV). Ms. Wilson has specialized expertise in higher education accreditation. She is the Chair of the Accreditation Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and serves as Chair of the Doctoral Task Force. Her professional experiences have provided her with in-depth understanding of the key components that are necessary to successfully build bridges between complementary and alternative health practices and western/allopathic health care. Ms. Wilson’s background in business and organization management includes expertise in grant writing and fundraising to promote and sustain integrative health centers and educational program development. She has worked in integrative medicine and nonprofit health care organizations since 1987 and has served as a board member at a variety of community-based organizations. Her leadership and governance skills include fiscal management, fundraising, strategic planning and organizational development. Ms. Wilson sits on the Governance Committee for the American Public Health Association. Her leadership style is that of a consensus builder and supporting people to do what is necessary to reach their full potential in the most effective, creative and respectful way possible. Ms. Wilson is pursuing a PhD at California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, CA. Her dissertation is an exploration of the views and experiences of senior practitioners of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AOM) and how this collective set of attitudes may shape the developing field of AOM. Additionally, she is a doctoral candidate at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco, CA.
