Biographical Sketch: Nancy Breen, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health. Dr. Breen received her PhD in Economics at the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research in New York City in 1988. She served as NCI project officer to the National and California Health Interview Surveys (NHIS, CHIS) since 1999 and continues to work on these surveys. Her publications have largely focused on access to cancer screening services. Dr. Breen also collaborates on multi-disciplinary research teams to develop and disseminate the Health Disparities Calculator (HD*Calc) and to develop and test a tool to measure racial-ethnic discrimination in multi-cultural and multi-lingual population groups. Both of these projects reflect her broader interest in health equity, and how public programs can be improved using evidence from systematic routine monitoring. Dr. Breen is strongly committed to designing regional surveillance systems to inform local health actions.
