Biographical Sketch:
BERNARD D. GOLDSTEIN, M.D. Dr. Goldstein is Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health and the former Dean (2001-2006) of the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health. From 1986-2001 he served as the Director of the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute, a joint program of Rutgers University and the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He was the Chair of the Department of Environmental and Community Medicine at the medical school from 1980-2001. He is a physician, board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Toxicology, and a member of the Institute of Medicine. His experience includes serving as Assistant Administrator for Research and Development of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1983-1985. He has served as president of the Society for Risk Analysis, vice president of the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE), and a member of the NIH National Advisory Environmental Health Sciences Council (NAEHS). His past activities include member and chairperson of the NIH Toxicology Study Section, EPA’s Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee and numerous Institute of Medicine and National Research Council committees. He was the inaugural chair of the National Board of Public Health Examiners, and currently serves as its Executive Director. He is now the Chair of the Board of the Foundation to Advance Public Health Through Certification.
