3274.0 HIV Risk Behaviors among Men: Sexuality, Culture, and ContextMonday, November 5, 2007: 2:30 PM

Rates of HIV/AIDS remain high among certain segments of the male population. The focus of this poster session is research related to increasing our knowledge base in terms of why rates are higher among certain groups of men. Topics/issues covered in this session include the following: (1) what are the current trends in socio-demographics and risk behaviors among young men who have sex with men, (2) what is the role of the internet with respect to engaging in HIV risk behaviors with unknown partners, (3) how do risk behaviors vary as a function of having sex only with men or having sex with both men and women, (4) have HIV prevention messages become “old” , thereby accounting for the resurgence of high-risk behavior among men who have sex with men, and (5) what is the role of the criminal justice system and substance use with respect to high-risk activities.
Session Objectives: 1. Identify barriers with current HIV prevention messages directed at MSMs.
2. Describe sexual behavior practices and HIV risk levels of MSMs.
3. Describe the role of the criminal justice system with respect to injection drug use among MSMs.
