Black Caucus of Health Workers

Submit Abstract

The Black Caucus of Health Workers (BCHW) is now accepting abstracts for the American Public Health Association's 136th Annual Meeting and Exposition to be held October 25-29 in San Diego, CA. We invite you to submit abstracts for poster and oral presentations. Abstracts for a Student Poster session are also being accepted for this meeting. Abstracts should be 350 words or less and must include learning objectives. Incomplete abstracts will not be considered. We encourage abstracts related to the APHA theme for the 2008 Meeting: "Public Health Without Boarders." Abstracts should focus on public health and well-being in racial and ethnic populations and peoples of the African diaspora.

This Call for Abstracts for the scientific sessions requests papers relevant to peoples of the African diaspora in the following topic areas:
  • Borders within Borders, Cultural Differences in Health Outcomes
  • Environmental Health and Justice in Communities-of-Color
  • Etiology / Prevention / Management of Chronic Disease among African Peoples
  • Global Health Policy and its effect on Peoples of the African Diaspora
  • Graying of America / Elderly Health Care / Health of Baby Boomers
  • HIV/AIDS and other Infectious Diseases
  • Health Information and Informatics
  • Long- and Short- Term Mortality/Morbidity
  • Public Health Beyond Urban / Rural Borders
  • Solution-Based Health Care in the African Diaspora
  • Technology Theater: Health Imitating Art
  • Utilization / Implementation / Acceptance of Health Technology in Health Care Settings
The Black Caucus of Health Workers invites members to submit abstracts no more than 350 words. Please note that additional summaries may be submitted and should not exceed 1,000 words. All abstracts will be reviewed on independent merit according to a standardized process for abstract reviewers.

Abstracts should follow the 2008 Annual Theme: Public Health Without Boarders. All abstracts must:

• Be 350 words or less;
• Clearly state whether a supplemental summary is to be considered;
• Be original previously unpresented work;
• Follow proper protocol for APHA abstract submission; no use of brand names or organizations is permitted.
• Be submitted electronically through the APHA on-line electronic abstract submission website;
• Be received no later than 11:59 pm (PST), FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2008.

Potential presenters interested in submitting a summary (no more than 1,000 words) must email their summary and relevant contact information to Diane R. Johnson at bchw1968@gmail.org by 11:59 pm (PST), FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2008. Incomplete abstracts will not be considered.

CALL FOR ABSTRACT: BCHW STUDENT POSTER SESSION
The BCHW is actively seeking posters for presentation by Graduate Students (Masters / Doctoral) at accredited graduate schools. Student status must be stated at the point of abstract submission. Student status including anticipated graduate date will be verified prior to abstracts being accepted for presentation. All presentations must be original work that has not previously been presented, in-press, or published. Student posters should follow the conference theme and/or BCHW focus areas as well as meet all appropriate eligibility requirements including but not limited to membership to BCHW and/or APHA. The BCHW is interested in individuals who can present on original, basic or applied research that addresses public health research, programs and policies impacting the health and quality of life of African-Americans and related, vulnerable populations. The deadline for submission of Abstracts is FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2008. Only individual abstracts are being accepted at this time. Email the Program Planner for instructions and deadlines for full session proposals.

The BCHW encourages individuals with local, national and international research experience to submit abstracts. New investigators and students are encouraged to respond.
