Occupational Health and Safety

 Submit Abstract
The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Section welcomes abstracts on topics related to workers’ health and safety for the 136th Annual Meeting of the American Public Health Association. This year's meeting is titled, “Public Health Without Borders.” We are particularly interested in abstracts for papers or abstracts for full sessions that reflect this theme in the context of occupational health and safety.

Topics of particular interest to the OHS Section are:
  • Addressing emerging technologies and protection of exposed workers
  • Domestic and international health and safety program evaluation
  • Effective health and safety interventions
  • Health and safety design systems or ‘built-in’ safety
  • Health and safety issues and programs that address immigrant, minority, younger and older workers; other vulnerable populations of workers
  • Integration of health promotion/wellness and occupational health/safety in the workplace
  • Policy and regulation that impacts workers’ health and safety
  • Social justice and human rights related to occupational health and safety
  • Surveillance of work-related injuries and illnesses, particularly novel methods and projects that address undercounting/under-reporting
  • The future of occupational safety and health
  • Translation of research into practice
  • Union/community-based projects
  • Other topics of current interest to OHS
The Occupational Health Disparities Institute seeks proposals for 90 minute sessions or individual presentations on disparities in occupational health, including issues of immigrant, migrant and minority worker groups, the intersection of social justice and occupational health, and international and border occupational health disparities.

All submissions should inform and encourage discussions at the meeting. Please refer to the list of suggested topics and consider how your abstract may contribute to the Annual Meeting's theme. Deadline for abstract submission is February 6, 2008, 11:59 PM (EST).

You are invited to submit an abstract for a poster, oral or roundtable presentation, or a 90 minute session. The OHS strongly encourages the submission of proposals for organized sessions of 3-5 presentations on one of the topics listed above. You may submit a proposal for a 90-minute session at this time by submitting individual abstracts for each presentation, or submitting an overall abstract for the session, with the intent to submit individual abstracts later. Your abstract should describe the role, point-of-view, or perspective brought by each of the anticipated/proposed speakers. Preference will be given to sessions that are coordinated with other APHA Sections. Please indicate whether your session is to be considered for CE credit and in what discipline(s).
