Abstract Submission

Abstracts are submitted electronically through the APHA Web site, < www.apha.org > or (http://apha.confex.com/apha/136am/oasys.epl). The Web site provides complete instructions on the length and format of abstracts and the information required on authors. The deadline for submissions is February 15, 2008. Only original material not presented elsewhere will be accepted. Abstracts may be from 150 words up to 350 words maximum.

Abstracts may be designated “Oral Only”, “Poster Only”, or “No Preference”. APHA has general guidelines for these three format options. Oral sessions are limited and very competitive, so you are encouraged to consider selecting “No Preference”—each year we must turn down abstracts of merit because we do not have space and authors selected “Oral Only”. Please give the Program Committee as many options as possible to accept your presentation.

Process for review:

All submitted abstracts will be peer reviewed for consideration of inclusion in the program. Individuals should submit material only if they, or a substitute, are committed to attending the Annual Meeting and presenting the paper or poster. If accepted for presentation, the author (or designate) will be expected to register and attend the conference in San Diego, California, October 2008. There is no financial aid or assistance available (including, but not limited to, registration, airfare, lodging, etc.) for author attendance at the Annual Meeting. Individuals who may have difficulty attending the APHA annual meeting should identify a co-author that will be able to attend and participate in the program. Invitations to present will be withdrawn should authors of award abstracts be unable to present at the Annual Meeting.

Notification of acceptance or rejection for all abstracts submitted is sent in May by e-mail to the contact person designated in the abstract submission. Presenters are notified of date, time and location of their sessions during the summer. Should you withdraw an accepted abstract, the Program Chair will select a replacement; please do not provide a substitute. Information detailing the PHN Section’s Preliminary Program and Final Program will be available on the PHN Section Web site and copies of the Final PHN Section Program including locations and last-minute changes will be available at the PHN Section Booth.

Please refer to the abstract submission page for abstract submission guidelines Referral to web pages or URLs may not be used for abstracts. For any and all inquiries about your abstract, always refer to the abstract number assigned to you by the on-line system.

Additionally, the session topics are preliminary and do not reflect the precise content of the final program, which will be based on peer-reviewer evaluations, program theme, and diversity of topics.

Abstract Review•

Abstracts should be no less than 150 words and no more than 350 words. Abstracts must include all these elements in the following structured format:
• Background: Introduction or background: study objectives, hypothesis, or a description of the problem;
• Methods: program design/methodology that entails scientific research (for both quantitative or qualitative research); Study design includes a description of participants, procedures, measures, and appropriate statistical analyses;
• Results: program evaluation results or expected results in summary form; and
• Conclusions: discussion, to include importance or significance of the work.

All Abstracts are subject to masked peer review by at least three reviewers. Please remove any references to a specific institution in the body of the abstract to permit masked review and ensure fairness. By submitting an abstract proposal, the author(s) agree that, if accepted, the paper will be presented as scheduled.

All Abstracts must be submitted electronically using the APHA Meeting abstract submission website by the date published on the APHA website for the PHN section. Faxed, and email submissions cannot be accepted. APHA will send email notices of acceptance to abstract authors in early June 2008.

All abstracts must be submitted with at least two learning objectives in the proper APHA format (i.e., “By the end of the session, the participant will be able to…”). These are needed as a standing APHA requirement and consideration for ANCC/PHN contact hours. Incomplete abstracts will not be reviewed.

Please check the abstract title and text for spelling and grammatical errors. Do not include references or citations in the text of the abstract. Do not include brand or trade names in the title and/or text of the abstract; generic names are required for continuing education credit. Do not include your name or contact information in the text portion as this prohibits blind peer review. If you are unable to identify a specific session for your abstract, please submit it under "Other." Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in your abstract being rejected.
The PHN Nurse Reviewers rank abstracts through a multi-tier peer review process. Abstracts are evaluated on importance related to:
  • does the presentation provide new findings and/or innovative ideas (cutting-edge concepts and innovations, best practices) with significant impact on policy, practice implications or advocacy in the public health field
  • methodological/project soundness -is the methodology sound (analytical design for research, systematic approach for practice and or policy), clearly stated, and appropriate to the topic or project? Are the sample and data and/or the population and community recent, representative, unbiased and of adequate size? Are implications identified for future research, practice, and or policy;
  • clarity -is the content communicated in a clear, logical and understandable way?, as well as relation to overall Section priorities (See Call for Abstract priorities);
  • Annual Meeting and Section Theme: Relevance to public health without borders and nursing without walls.
