Objectives

To analyze the status of oral health and care in middle and old aged Japanese population and to propose effective care programs to prevent missing teeth, periodontitis and dysphagia.

Measures

We observed the present situation on missing teeth, periodontitis, chewing ability and other relating to the oral health and care for middle and old aged Japanese based on "National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHNS) 2005".

Results

1. Proportions of persons with more than 27 teeth were about a half in age 40s, decreasing with the increase of age to as low as 10% in age 70s. 23% of males and 32% of females had no teeth in this age group. Number of teeth was less in all ages in females.

2. In both sex of age 40s, 85% could chew any food well. In age 70s, it was less than a half and in 10% of those could not chew most of the foods. No sex differences were observed.

3. 40% of 50s and 60s suffered from progressive periodontitis in both sex.

4. In male smokers of age 50s and over, more loss of teeth, less chewing ability and more gingival abnormality were observed.

5. In general, those who can chew any type of food took higher amount of nutrient intake.

Conclusion

Oral health and care of middle and old aged Japanese was observed by NHNS. The oral health level and nutrient intake were disadvantageous in smokers.

Learning Objectives:
