170979 Promoting family communication in regards to sexual health: A parent training programTuesday, October 28, 2008: 4:30 PM
In a study by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation in 1999, 59% of adolescents 10-12 years old and 45% of adolescents 13-15 years old said they personally learned the “most” about sexuality from their parents. Planned Parenthood recognizes that parents play a critical role in providing information and assurance to their children about sexual matters and has initiated Adult Role Models (ARMS) so that parents will receive the support they need to be successful.
Adult Role Models is a community–based program which has proven highly successful at Planned Parenthood. ARMS empower parents to take the initiative to educate and inform their community about sexual health and teen pregnancy. Armed with knowledge and confidence, ARMS volunteers lead workshops within their communities, teaching other parents to talk openly and informatively with their children about sexuality and sexual health. These workshops are presented in a culturally competent format and are bilingual. PP has partnered with several community agencies such as The Urban League, ASPIRA (A Latino Leadership Agency), Repair Shop Outreach Ministries, Pahokee City Parks and Recreational and The Heart Project. ARMs is a success because of the partnerships between community agencies and the dedication of community members. Collaboration between agencies shows the community that when it comes to public health there are no borders.
