172559 Emergency management of mosquito-borne disease outbreaks: Guidelines for emergency response in a changing nation

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

Daniel Sinclair , The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, Arlington, VA
The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) has produced national guidelines to help state and local agencies prepare now for the emergency management of mosquito-borne disease outbreaks. This innovative document covers a number of issues and potential solutions, including practical recommendations for assisting state and local governments as they prepare for emerging and re-emerging mosquito-borne disease threats. Geared towards policymakers, these guidelines assist communities with limited resources in developing resource-sharing programs, inexpensive monitoring systems and educational materials. In an era of unprecedented global travel, a changing climate and the potential for shifting vector patterns, it is our fervent hope that these guidelines will help the mosquito control and public health communities prepare now for the challenge of emergency management of mosquito-borne disease outbreaks.

Learning Objectives:
The proposed session will: 1. Discuss practical, low-cost solutions that could help minimally-funded programs implement adequate mosquito control measures during natural disasters. 2. Share best practices and case examples of how mosquito control programs have successfully responded during emergency situations such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. 3. Develop the role of the various traditional and nontraditional stakeholders (local, state, federal and non-governmental) who have a role in mosquito control during emergency situations.
