Malaria, tuberculosis, leprosy, AIDS/HIV, pre-natal care, birth deformities, child malnutrition, and care for the elderly are major public health concerns globally. New diseases, such as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and H5N1 virus (bird flu) affect the people's health, the local economy (decreased tourism) and the rest of the world, as well. The American government initiated and supports Healthy People 2010 (HP 2010). HP 2010 is a set of disease prevention and health promotion objectives for our Nation to achieve and can be used by many different people, States, communities, professional organizations, and others to help develop programs to improve health. Why not recommend and support this initiative in 3rd world countries, too?

This presentation will provide information on the public health needs of Morocco, Madagascar, India and Vietnam. Health care needs such as: improving nutrition, nutritional education and nutritional supplements; education in proper sanitation in homes, public areas, including clinics/hospitals; chiropractic care: chiropractors working together with local medical doctors to help identify troubled areas of public health issues; and last, how to improve medical care by donating necessary medical equipment, such as stethoscopes and blood pressure cuffs, x-ray machines, etc.

It will also describe how, if HP 2010 is accepted, implementation to the country's specific public health issues will be made to assist international and local health care personnel and their facilities in their plight to take care of the poor and underserved communities.

Learning Objectives:
1) Recognize and evaluate the need to assist and educate national and local health officials on public health issues in 3rd world countries; 2) Identify current health issues and develop preventative health care plans for regional illnesses (ex. malaria, leprosy, AIDS/HIV, etc) and new illnesses (ex. SARS and H5N1 virus); 3) List and discuss a health care “wish” list to aid medical personnel (ex: medicines, nutritional supplements, modern equipment [blood pressure cuffs and stethoscopes], chiropractic care, etc.); 4) Describe, discuss and develop a Healthy People 2010 initiative specific for that particular country
