PUBLIC HEALTH COMPETENCIES IN MBBS PROGRAM
KU SCHOOL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES Author: Prof. Naimeswar Sinha, APHA, TAG No.24958, (Green). Background Significant efforts have been made in the past to meet the basic health needs of the Nepalese but the present status remains below desirable. There is clear evidence that the medical education is not focused to the need of this country .So Kathmandu University has started its MBBS program with aim to overcome this dilemma by incorporating more public health issues. Objectives To design a curriculum so as the basic medical doctor must possess the core knowledge & clinical skills to diagnose and resolve the health problems of the community. To achieve desirable personality, attitudes and competency ingrained in the profession. Methods of Learning and Strategy: - Community-Based Learning and Problem Based Learning Features of Curriculum: - SPICES Model Public Health Competency Inputs During First year & Second year: - Students learn the social phenomena of health, disease and care through community diagnosis program, observational study and interventional activities. During Third & fourth year: - Working on projects on school health, family health, occupational health and district health management system. During internship: - They will conduct comprehensive health care activities independently.
