Introduction

This successful innovative program promotes complementary, alternative, and healthy lifestyle changes. It educates participants on methods of utilizing micronutrients, and phytonutrients as it promotes healthy dietary lifestyle changes and physical activity to reduce and/or eliminate high blood glucose levels.

Background

Over the past seven years, the Energy Institute of the Healing Arts Foundation has provided 1,000 diabetic and overweight residents, ranging from 20 to 65 years old from Prince George's County, Maryland and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area with information on nutrition and natural glucose control.

Methods

The program involves twelve weekly sessions, four times a year with approximately 30 to 40 participants per group. It provides lectures and didactic sessions introducing healthy lifestyle changes, micronutrient and phytonutrients protocols along with Qi Gong exercises.

Findings

Over seven years, findings based on physician reports indicate that participants reduced their blood glucose levels by 60 to 90 percent and approximately 300 participants demonstrated a 40 to 60% rate of weight loss by the end of the program.

Conclusion:

The study showed through education, healthy dietary life style changes, micronutrient and phytonutrients protocols along with exercises participants lost significant weight and reduced and/or eliminated their high glucose levels.

Implications:

The study shows the importance of integrating alternative methods in healthy lifestyle and micronutrient protocols in consumer-based programs. Such efforts will potentially enhance the outcomes of diabetic research and interventions.

Learning Objectives:
The learning objective is to present educational information on the nutritional deficiencies associated with diabetes mellitus and the utilization of complementary alternative healthy lifestyle programs to reduce and/or eliminate these conduction through using micronutrients and phytonutrients.
