Purpose: To assess acceptability and usability of a bilingual, interactive, tailored, computer-based intervention to promote use of hearing protection.

Background: Effective hearing loss prevention is needed for 1.4 million U.S. Latino construction workers. Educational materials have been developed for primarily non-Latino, English-speaking populations. The researchers developed the intervention in several stages with small groups of Latino construction workers. This presentation will describe the final pilot in preparation for large-scale evaluation in a randomized controlled trial.

Methods: Latino roofers (n=13) were recruited through their union to participate in the beta version of the computer-based intervention and complete a post-intervention survey. Bilingual researchers were available to answer questions, make detailed observations of usability issues, and record observations in field notes.

Results: Less than half of the participants (6) reported ever using a computer and none reported daily use. Users were able to progress through the program with minimal assistance. Observers noted several usability issues and program errors, all of which were amenable to improvement in the final version of the software. Participants unanimously agreed that the program kept their interest and that the length and pace of the program were “just right”. Most (12) agreed that the program was entertaining, an effective way to learn about hearing protection, and the language was not complicated. Narrative quotes from the open-ended comments will be presented.

Discussion: Participants were able to complete the program with minimal assistance. The revised program is being evaluated in a randomized controlled trial with Latino construction workers.

Learning Objectives:
1. Describe a tailored intervention to prevent noise-induced hearing loss. 2. Identify one computer usability issue and solution.
