The Latino Health Collaborative of Greater Cincinnati (LHCGC) was founded in April, 2007 by University of Cincinnati physicians and professors from the Departments of Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, Allied Health Sciences, Psychology and Education for the purpose of building strong partnerships between the university and community-based organizations serving the health care needs of Latinos in the community. The mission was identified as "utilizing a multidisciplinary group of committed university professionals to create a dialogue and form collaborations with community partners serving Latino patients and clients in order to identify their health care needs, develop required services and improve the quality of care." The purpose of the LHCGC has been to improve the overall health status of the Latino community by identifying health care needs, assessing existing services and gaps in service and increasing the availability of culturally competent health care services through community partnerships. In Fall, 2007, the LHCGC was invited to participate in a Latino Community Fair and used this opportunity to develop and administer a Needs Assessment Tool to community Latinos which included the following information: Demographics, Short Form Patient Questionnaire (PSQ-18), Doctor-Patient Relationship and Barriers to Health Care Utilization to identify and assess the health care needs of Latinos in Greater Cincinnati. The results are presented to help other organizations gain insight into the value of university and community-based partnerships in serving the growing Latino community populations and improve the health status and the health care delivery models to Latinos in the Greater Cincinnati area and in the United States. The value and synergy of the univeristy/community collaboration can be far-reaching and increase the opportunities for success in improving health in culturally diverse populations.
