Bari Cornet, MSW, MPH , School of Social Welfare, University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley, CA
Combined MSW/MPH academic programs began in the early 1980s. In the past decade, the number has increased dramatically. There are now 23 programs in the United States, with several others under development. They have a variety of structures and go by a series of inconsistent names. With few exceptions, the programs are small and somewhat isolated within their schools. They are faced with the changing environments of their own departments as well as those of their accrediting agencies. The ability to consult and problem solve with other MSW/MPH programs has become increasingly important. To address this, several meetings have been held and a list-serve created to exchange information. However, additional networking and consultation continues to be needed. While the programs differ in structure, they have certain commonalities. The purpose of this presentation is to provide a venue in which common issues are discussed and expertise shared. These issues include 1) the integrative seminar, including structure, content and frequency, 2) differing models for final projects and/or comp exams, 3) curriculum coordination and planning and 4) integrated vs. separate field work. This session will present the experiences of several schools along each of these dimensions. In addition, it will be an opportunity for MSW/MPH Program Coordinators to gather to exchange information and to provide guidance to each other. It will also provide grounding for those considering the creation of such programs.

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify models of MSW/MPH combined academic programs. 2. Present challenges to the implementation of such programs. 3. Discuss alternative solutions to meeting these challenges.
