OBJECTIVE: To determine the socio-demographic characteristics associated with maternal resiliency during pregnancy. METHODS: We used data from the first wave of 2007 Los Angeles Mommy and Baby (LAMB) Survey. LAMB is a mail sample survey with telephone follow-up for non-respondents based on multistage clustered design. Our preliminary analyses were based on the responses of 721 women with a live birth in 2007 in Los Angeles County. Maternal resiliency was operationalized as a multi-dimensional construct comprising of personal resources (self-esteem and mastery), social support (partner, social network, and neighborhood support), and spirituality. The relationship between socio-demographic characteristics and maternal resiliency was assessed using Pearson's chi square tests. RESULTS: Unmarried women had low partner support (unadjusted OR=5.41-28.09; p<0.001), social network support (unadjusted OR=1.77-2.25; p<0.001), neighborhood support (unadjusted OR=1.64-3.60; p<0001-0.011), and self-esteem (unadjusted OR=2.23-3.00; p<0.001-0.029) scores.Women under age 18 were more likely to low partner support scores than women aged 19-34 (unadjusted OR=2.62-6.89; p<0.001-0.025). Having less than 12 years of schooling was associated with low partner support (unadjusted OR=2.32-3.97; p<0.001-0.023), social network support (unadjusted OR=1.75-3.82; p<0.001-0.023), neighborhood support (unadjusted OR=1.65-2.64; p<0.001-0.031), and self-esteem (unadjusted OR=2.61-3.70; p<0.001-0.007) scores. Compared to women with household annual incomes between $40,000-59,000, women with incomes less than $19,000 had lower partner support (unadjusted OR=2.49-6.35; p<0.002-0.032), social network support (unadjusted OR=2.55-4.02; p<0.001-0.006), and mastery (unadjusted OR=2.85; p<0.012) scores. DISCUSSION: Marital status, age, education level, and income level were significantly associated with maternal resiliency during pregnancy. Further research regarding maternal resiliency and its relationship with birth outcomes is warranted.
