Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder causing significant disability and decreased quality of life for 1.5 million persons living in the US. Health education, access to support groups, regular exercise, and good nutrition are crucial for managing the effects of the disease. There are several promising complementary medical approaches for Parkinson's patients that can assist with the control and management of the disease such as nutritional support, massage/bodywork therapy, and the incorporation of yoga stretches and Chinese-style exercise such as Tai Chi, and Qi Gong. Access to Parkinson's support groups and complementary medical information for Parkinson's disease are not readily available to patients living in underserved areas of rural Appalachia. However, a unique opportunity exists for those living near Robbinsville, North Carolina in Western North Carolina. Patricia Johnson, a holistic primary care provider, and physical therapy associates at the Tallulah Health Center in Robbinsville provide monthly support groups utilizing conventional and complementary approaches for managing and treating the disease. Case study profiles and repeated measures on Parkinson related symptoms, quality life and psychosocial outcomes were collected over one year period to explore the benefits of attending monthly support groups for 15 patients. Patients attending support group meetings represent a diverse sample of Parkinson's patients who benefited holistically from attending monthly support groups led by Dr. Johnson. The present study provides documentation of the benefits of support groups utilizing complementary medical approaches for helping patients manage the disease.

Learning Objectives:
1. Describe complementary medical approaches used in the Tallulah Health Center Parkinson's Disease Support Group. 2. Identify assessment methods for evaluating benefits of the Parkinson's Disease Support Group. 3. Discuss findings of the study documenting benefits of the Parkinson's Support Group utilizing complementary medical approaches.
