The Agricultural Safety and Health Bureau of the North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDOL) is charged with the inspection of farmworker housing and with the prevention of agricultural workplace injuries. The agricultural workplace is a dangerous one;seven heat stress fatalities have occurred in the past several years in North Carolina. In addition, incidents involving farm machinery have injured or killed workers. In an effort to prevent these injuries and fatalities, this Bureau worked with N.C. State University (NCSU) film production to create a series of 4 DVDs in Spanish with English subtitles on each of these topics. The topics focus on heat stress; tobacco balers; tobacco harvesters; fork lifts. The NCDOL Bureau was responsible for the creation and production of each segment, and NCSU provided the technical support and expertise required. Each of the four segments was filmed on several NC farms in 2007 and features farmworkers employed there. Brochures are available in English and in Spanish in conjunction with the DVD.
Learning Objectives: Create a series of four short training DVDs to prevent the agricultural injuries identified through workers compensation claims as those with a high probability of causing serious injury or death.
