The State Sanitary Inspectorate, (SSI), was established in order to protect public health and well-being. Its mission is the prevention & control of communicable disease, occupational and environmental hazard prevention, surveillance of health & safety as well as promotion of public health. Operational tasks are carried out by State Sanitary Inspection Units according to the State Sanitary Inspection Act of 14th March 1985, (Amended Journal of Laws 2006, No. 122, item 851). In 2006 there were 16 sanitary-epidemiological stations in the voivodships, (ie. provinces), 318 at county level and 10 at border posts. As the SSI is in charge of assessing the condition of public health in Poland, the long-term exposure to pathogenic factors occurring in food, water intended for human consumption and in the air are all considered as priority issues. Also of vital importance is that due consideration be given to such target areas as the work environment, premises where food, healthcare and education are provided, facilities for tourism and recreation and buildings intended for public use. In addition, the SSI undertakes analytical and evaluation studies so as to provide the basis for national long-term health plans and to help in setting priorities for further action as and when deemed appropriate. The SSI employs highly professional staffs who constantly improve and upgrade their skills during their work. It possesses a network of modern, well-equipped laboratories for conducting tests on food, water etc. Most are accredited and fully comply with EU standards.
