PURPOSE: This proposal seeks to implement a longitudinal, evidence-based certificate program in global health (GH-CP) to be offered to medical students at Georgetown University School of Medicine. OBJECTIVE: This program will prepare medical students to more effectively address issues unique to global public health. DESCRIPTION: The GH-CP course is based on 7 modules, 2 each for the first three years and a scholarly capstone project conducted as the 7th module during the fourth year. The modules contain a mixture of problem-based learning, journal club discussion-focused seminars, independent completion of internet-based coursework, and practical experiences. Several aspects of the GH-CP make it unique amongst similar “tracts” offered at medical schools: first, it addresses a measured need and desire for GH education; 90% of surveyed students were “maybe” to “very” interested in participating in the proposed GH-CP. Second, it draws from a wide range of faculty members from the schools of law, business, foreign service, nursing, and local institutions such as the World Bank and the Global Health Council. Third, its integration into the overall medical curriculum allows students to meet general course requirements while participating in the GH-CP. Fourth, the capstone research project allows students to not only gain knowledge and experience from the GH-CP, but contribute to the field as well. CONCLUSION: Today's physicians must be adept in considering global health concerns regardless of specialty. The GH-CP fills an obvious gap in medical education at Georgetown University School of Medicine, and could serve as an example for other institutions.
Learning Objectives: 1. Understand the relevance of global public health issues as they relate to general medical student education
2. Identify various methods for integrating global health topics into general medical education using multiple low-cost resources
3. Assess the feasibility of implementing a similar global health certificate program at other institutions
