What is immigration and what has it become? Why do we have to talk about this issue? Who are the current immigrants and where do they come from? What happens to them when they get here? What is their health status? What, exactly, are these trans-border issues? What does all this have to do with public health anyway?

As the public health world tries to deal with the many public health issues associated with immigration, these and many more questions come up. In order to address the myriad of public health concerns in this population, we must first step back and consider the make-up, and health beliefs/behavior/practices of these populations. This session will examine the issues that affect the health and well-being of immigrants and consider potential strategies for addressing these challenges.

Learning Objectives:
Discuss why immigration is an important public health issue. Describe who makes up the current immigrant population. Describe the health status of these communities by reviewing their health indicators and other measures of health outcomes.
