The Initiative on the Study and Implementation of Systems (ISIS), a four-year project sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), represents an innovative approach to understanding and ultimately managing the interplay of the various social, biological and behavioral elements that lead to tobacco use and cessation. Through ISIS, NCI has supported a careful exploration of four elements of systems approaches to improving tobacco control: systems organizing, system dynamics, system networks, and systems knowledge. Together these elements constitute a systems thinking approach to problem solving. Each presentation on this panel will concern itself with some aspect of systems thinking.
