A healthy nation needs a competent public health workforce. Since their release in 2001, the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals has served as a guideline for many health departments to ensure their workforces are competent. In the years since the Core Competencies were adopted, the field of public health has seen major changes, from the events of September 11, 2001 to new technologies, and an aging workforce. Thus, in 2007 an effort was undertaken by the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice to revise and update the Core Competencies. This session will explore the major changes and revisions to the Core Competencies and engage in a discussion aimed at getting participants' comments on the new draft and their thoughts on how to promote use. Participants will explore the current uses of the Core Competencies, and will discuss possible new applications as the field of public health moves toward credentialing and accreditation.
Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will gain an understanding of the current applications of the Core Competencies.
2. Participants will understand the major differences between the original version and the new draft of the Core Competencies and why these changes were made.
3. Participants will engage in useful discussions and critiquing of the new version of the Core Competencies.
