This session will describe the importance of standards in defining a profession in both its academic preparation and its practice in the field. It will distinguish a profession from other type of identities, such as jobs, occupations, trades, careers, and livelihoods. In addition, it will place into context macro trends with within professional preparation programs and practice expectations and how these demonstrate the leadership of the health education profession.

Learning Objectives:
1. Outline the characteristics of a profession and standards of practice. 2. Place into context the steps taken by the health education profession to solidify its practice and academic standards.
