Jon R. Roth, MS, BS , California Dental Association Foundation, Sacramento, CA
Organized dentistry has held longstanding policies in support of community water fluoridation. In 1999, the California Dental Association Foundation was awarded a $15 million grant from The California Endowment to initiate a statewide coalition of oral health stakeholders to achieve favorable community support for constructing water fluoridation facilities in California cities and water districts. In the last 10 years, organized dentistry has been a partner in local communities with achieving this goal and increasing the number of Californians receiving the benefit of community water fluoridation from 17% to approximately 50%. Most recently the CDA Foundation partnered with local advocates and supported the work of elected officials in securing funding from First 5 San Diego to complete water fluoridation in San Diego County. This presentation will discuss the role of organized dentistry in fluoridation throughout California, and specifically in San Diego.
