Effective strategy to achieve fluoridation
Tuesday, October 28, 2008: 1:15 PM
Achieving fluoridation in a community is a complex and sometimes lengthy process. Before attempting any public action, it is vital to develop the infrastructure that will support local public policy in favor of fluoridation. The foundation for this infrastructure in San Diego begins with a steering committee composed of former legislators, and key representatives from health institutions and business organizations. Media always plays a major role in informing public opinion. It is critical that media reports on the state of oral health in the community and the science and merits of fluoridation are well informed; editorial support is highly desired. A broad based coalition of community advocates representing oral health interests and the needs of the underserved is essential. All of these elements serve to create an ongoing “dialogue” between constituents and decision makers. Lastly, it is important that the funding source for fluoridation be identified and committed prior to any public action. Developing support from community leaders, organizations, the media and the funding source is all essential prior to attempting a vote by any public body.
