Graduates of Public Health Administration programs are generally expected by their prospective employers to be prepared to function in their working environments upon hiring. Meeting this expectation can be difficult for academic programs focused on the rigors of administrative curricula. Internships and assistantships can help fill the needs for practical experience, but a program requirement can be more valuable if it is well-designed and structured. The service-learning /capstone experience required in the University of Nebraska MPH program provides the student with a formal approach to learning and service in a community-based organization. This two-semester course (for most students) integrates classroom learning leading to attainment of necessary competencies with community-based projects (i.e., research, program evaluation, project management, and other administrative initiatives). It has resulted in greater faculty involvement in the MPH program and its students, increased knowledge of community-based organizations and their environments by students and faculty, and increased visibility of the MPH program. Although each project/experience is unique, the service-learning/capstone experience serves as a model for academic-practice partnerships.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to: 1. Describe the Service-Learning/Capstone Experience required of students in the University of Nebraska MPH Program. 2. Identify how the public health practice community is involved in this initiative. 3. List the benefits of this linkage in terms of community-based participatory research, practice enhancement, student growth, program visibility. 4. Articulate the long-term value of the required course component to MPH graduates and their employers.

Presenting author's disclosure statement:

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I am the Director of the joint University of Nebraska Medical Center/University of Nebraska at Omaha MPH Program. The program has graduated 42 students since its inception in 2002 and each student has completed a service-learning/capstone experience. Much has been learned from these experiences at the program level and I will speak of this. I also have other experience in service-learning, having written two successful grants related to this, and have participated in developing syllabi incorporating service-learning and community-based student research.
