Biographical Sketch:
Salaam Semaan, MPH, DrPH, is Deputy Associate Director for Science, National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, Georgia. Before her appointment to the National Center in 2006, Dr. Semaan served in a similar capacity in the Division of Sexually Transmitted Diseases Prevention (DSTDP), CDC, from 2001-2006. Prior to her appointment in DSTDP, Dr. Semaan worked as a behavioral scientist in the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, CDC, 1996-2001. Before moving to Atlanta, Dr. Semaan worked in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1990-1996), as a senior research associate with Philadelphia Health Management Corporation, and as a research associate with Albert Einstein Medical Center, and with the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Semaan worked also as a primary health care officer with Save the Children Federation, Beirut, Lebanon (1982-1985) and as a survey researcher and analyst with the Ministry of Health, Manama, Bahrain. Dr. Semaan has co-authored more than 55 articles and book chapters on prevention of HIV, STD, and viral hepatitis. She also co-edited the supplement “Do Behavioral HIV Interventions Work? A Review and Meta-Analysis” published by the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, 2002, 30 (Supplement 1): S1-S136. Dr. Semaan presented widely at national and international conferences and meetings, including responding to invitations to speak on topics in her areas of expertise. She serves as a peer-reviewer to numerous scientific journals. Her primary research interests include the science and ethics of prevention blood-borne and sexually transmitted infections, and her research is with different populations at risk for infection with HIV, STDs, and viral hepatitis, including women as well as drug users. Dr. Semaan received numerous awards and certificates of recognition for her work. Dr. Semaan received her masters in public health from the American University of Beirut and her doctorate in public health from the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland.
