As Co-Director of the Injury Surveillance and Prevention Program at the New York City Health Department, Dr. Stayton oversees the surveillance of violence and self-inflicted injuries citywide and at the neighborhood level. Using multiple data sources, Dr. Stayton and her staff have built the NYC’s Injury Surveillance System, which contains data on all intentional injury deaths and hospitalizations and a sample of intentional injuries treated in emergency departments. Suicide prevention is priority in NYC Health Department’s "Take Care New York" Initiative. For fifteen years, Dr. Stayton has conducted research in areas at the intersection of criminal justice and public health – in particular, intimate partner violence, self-inflicted injuries, adolescent risk behaviors, and substance abuse. For eight years, she taught Epidemiology and Research Methods at Brooklyn College in the City University of New York.
