Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Barbara Barlow is the Director of the Injury Free Coalition for Kids, developed as a National Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation of Princeton, New Jersey and located at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. Injury Free is a coalition of Injury Prevention programs in Pediatric Trauma Centers located in major cities across the United States. The Program reduces injury through education, construction of safe play spaces,and the development and support of safe supervised activities with strong adult mentors. Major trauma admissions of Harlem children have decreased by more than 60% since the model program started in 1988. The program and Dr. Barlow have received awards from the American Hospital Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the US Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, the National Safety Council, the American Trauma Association, the National Association of Public Hospitals, Society of Public Heath Educators of APHA, The Hospital Association of New York, the American Association of Medical Colleges, the APHA section on Injury Control and Emergency Health Services,the Sloan Public Service award from the fund for the City of New York and others. Dr. Barlow's research has focused on traumatic injury to children and on injury prevention for the past 25 years. She received an MA in Psychology from Columbia University and an MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she was elected to AOA. Dr. Barlow trained in General Surgery at Bronx Municipal Hospital and Pediatric Surgery at Columbia University Babies Hospital. Currently, since her retirement as Director of Surgery at Harlem Hospital, she continues as the Director of Injury Free at Columbia University's School of Public Health.
