This informative session will focus on the epidemiology of a potpourri of infectious diseases. Presentations will include discussions of leptospirosis, botulism, and meningococcal disease. The relationship between time since onset of injection drug use and hepatitis C infection and depression and substance abuse in a hepatitis C register will be discussed in other presentations.
Session Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) will be able to:
1. List two host factors associated with leptospirosis in Hawaii
2. Identify the difference between age at onset of botulism between breast-fed and formula-fed infants
3. Describe the relationship between time since onset of drug injection and HCV incidence and prevalence rates in injection drug users
4. Discuss prevalence of mental health disorders and substance abuse in persons with newly-reported HCV infection
5. Compare the reported side effects of ciprofloxacin given at a distribution clinic with published studies
