This interesting session will focus on the epidemiology of women’s health. Presentations will include a discussion of the impact of preconception counseling on maternal behaviors, sexual identity and behavior as predictors of pap smear utilization, the prevalence of cardiovascular conditions in women veterans, and intimate partner violence and depression in a population of pregnant African Americans. One session will focus on the association between exercise patterns and bone mineral density in postmenopausal African American women.
Session Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) will be able to: 1. Articulate the importance of preconception counseling in the promotion of women’s and children’s health 2. Understand the relationship between weigh-bearing exercise and bone mineral density in postmenopausal African American women 3. Recognize that sexual behavior and identity have different effects on Pap smear utilization 4. Understand the importance of screening for both intimate partner violence and depression in pregnant women
