You have to see a doctor again? Continuity of care for immigrants
Overview:
Speakers will discuss a broad array of topics related to continuity of care for immigrants, ranging from medical issues for detainees to health and mental health issues in 3 immigrant communities in the US: East Africans in Minnesota, Arab Americans and Sudanese in California. There will also be discussion on the acculturation process and how is affects health, health behaviors and mental health. Health issues to be discussed include mortality and morbidity related to withholding care, parasites, chronic diseases, and mental health.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the session, participants will be able to: (1) describe what little is known about detainee deaths including the role of improperly treated chronic disease, (2) understand the roles of extent of trauma experience, "resettlement time" in the U.S., and treatment in the course/resolution of posttraumatic symptoms, (3) discuss the relationship between acculturation and health-related behaviors of Arab Americans, (4) develop a community outreach approach and determine appropriate parasite treatment for resettled Sudanese in the local community.
