5142.0 Health Policy Advocacy: APHA Affiliates’ Approaches

Wednesday, October 29, 2008: 12:30 PM
Oral
From banning smoking in public places to endorsing menu labeling for chain restaurants, APHA affiliates work at the state and local level to change health policy. Most affiliates have a policy endorsement process, many have used collaborative approaches or participation in coalitions to act on the policy positions taken. This session will provide an opportunity for three to five affiliates to present analysis of recent state-level advocacy efforts, to share the strengths of weaknesses of their approaches, and to field questions about effectiveness, level of effort, and lessons learned.
Session Objectives: Identify at least three strategies that have worked for Affiliates in achieving health policy changes in their states. Assess levels of effort, funding, and organizational capacity required for different strategies. Be able to describe steps for working successfully with coalitions or collaboratives.
