Five papers on the relationship of student health to academic achievement will be presented: Results of a 16-week physical activity pre-posttest study designed to explore the impact of physical activity on the attention/concentration scores of 8th grade (experimental) and 7th grade (control) male and female multiethnic, underserved Canadian high school students; Summary of the effects of a physical activity intervention program on the math and reading skills of 3rd and 4th grade students; Findings of the San Mateo, County “Kickoff-to-kindergarten” (KTC) summer school program developed to support the readiness-skills of low-income English as-a- second-language preschool children; Outcomes of a qualitative multi-state study undertaken to assess the value educators and parents placed on the relations between school health services and academic achievement ; and, a Synopsis of the New Mexico “Youth Risk & Resiliency Survey” (YRRS), administered in middle schools for the first time in 2007 to assess student behaviors most likely to endanger student health and the relations between behaviors and academic achievement.
Session Objectives: Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to (1) Discuss the results of a 16-week culturally tailored physical activity pre-posttest study done to assess the impact of physical activity on the attention/concentration scores of male and female multiethnic, underserved Canadian high school students; (2) Discuss the results of a study conducted with third and fourth graders to examine the effects of an experimental classroom physical activity intervention program developed to improve their math and reading scores compared to students assigned to control conditions; (3) Articulate the Kickoff-to-kindergarten (KTC) program designed to support the readiness skills of preschool children in San Mateo County, California; (4) Describe the results of a qualitative multi-state study undertaken to assess the values educators and parents placed on the relations of school health services and academic outcomes, and (5) Identify the findings of the New Mexico “Youth Risk & Resiliency Survey (YRRS) conducted among middle school students in 2007.
