5189.0 Innovative Public Health Nursing Curriculum

Wednesday, October 29, 2008: 12:30 PM
Oral
Public Health Nursing content has been relegated to the "back burner" in order to emphasize the intensity of acute care experiences in most baccalaureate programs. One paper describes the early integration of public health nursing into the baccalaureate nursing curriculum. Developing international alliances among public health professionals may streamline disease control efforts in multinational outbreaks, and facilitate public health learning opportunities. The use of non-nursing literature to augment course textbooks and nursing periodicals will be discussed.
Session Objectives: Discuss the advantages of early integration of public health nursing into the baccalaureate nursing curriculum. Describe two innovative teaching strategies to enhance the development of "cultural competence". Describe the value of "reflection" as a teaching strategy.
