Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Caucus of Public Health Workers

Submit Abstract

The LGBT Caucus of Public Health Workers is soliciting abstracts for presentation in its scientific sessions at the 137th Annual Meeting of the American Public Health Association in Philadelphia, PA, November 7-11, 2009. Topics for submission should focus on LGBT health research and/or the conference theme, "Water and Public Health: the 21st Century Challenge," such as but not limited to:
  • Alcohol, Recreational, and Prescription Drug Misuse Among LGBT Individuals
  • Domestic and Sexual Partner Violence
  • Funding for LGBT Research and Programming
  • Gay and Bisexual Men’s Health
  • HIV/AIDS/STD/Hepatitis Surveillance and Prevention Among LGBT Communities
  • Health Disparities Among Non-LGBT-Identifying Men and Women
  • Internet-based LGBT Research
  • LGBT Health Policy and Advocacy
  • LGBT Youth Research
  • Lesbian and Bisexual Women’s Health
  • Mental Health and Quality of Life Among LGBT Communities
  • Population-based LGBT Research
  • Research on Aging among LGBT Populations
  • Sampling and Recruitment Strategies for LGBT Research
  • Serving Cultural and Linguistic Minority LGBT Individuals
  • Special Topics
  • Tobacco Prevention Among LGBT Communities
  • Transgender Health
Scientific session formats include:
1) Oral presentation (individual)
2) Panel session (no more than 5 speakers on a specific topic) coordinated by a single individual. Following the APHA website guidelines, the coordinator must submit an abstract for the session as a whole with each speaker submitting an individual abstract for his/her presentation.
3) Poster presentation (individual)

All abstracts submitted to the Caucus undergo blinded, peer review. Reviews will not be forwarded to submitters.

The Caucus strongly encourages student participation and has established the Walter J. Lear Outstanding Student Research Award to recognize exceptional work by students on LGBT-related issues. The award consists of a stipend and free Caucus membership. Students are invited to submit abstracts at all levels of presentation (i.e. oral, poster, or panel). Please indicate student status when submitting.

Abstracts must be submitted online through the APHA website (www.apha.org/meetings) no later than February 12, 2009. Please note that deadlines differ among the various APHA Sections, SPIGs, Assemblies, and caucuses.

Continuing Education Credit
APHA values the ability to provide continuing education credit to physicians, nurses, and health educators at its annual meeting. Please complete all required information when submitting an abstract so members can claim credit for attending your session. These credits are necessary for members to keep their licenses and credentials.

For a session to be eligible for Continuing Education Credit, each presenter must provide:
1) An abstract free of trade and/or commercial product names
2) at least one MEASURABLE objective (to understand or to learn are not measurable objectives). Examples of Acceptable Measurable Action Words: explain, demonstrate, analyze, formulate, discuss, compare, differentiate, describe, name, assess, evaluate, identify, design, define, or list.
3) A signed Conflict of Interest form with a relevant qualification statement
