200543 Development of the Childhood Obesity Prevention Project in Prince Georges County Maryland, USAMonday, November 9, 2009
The Childhood Obesity Prevention Project addresses the concerns of childhood obesity in Prince Georges County Maryland, USA. While studies debate various aspects of the problem, a consensus has emerged that trends in childhood overweight bode poorly for the health status of children now and as they age to maturity. (Health In Schools, 2006). The focus for this presentation will be an overview of the community participatory methodology used in this project. Project Goal: To facilitate and support the development of a comprehensive community plan. Project Focus: Identifying population trends and environmental factors that increase the risk for childhood obesity within designated communities. Project Need assessment for (1) safety, access, maintenance and operation of community parks and recreational centers to promote increased physical activity for children, families and neighbors, (2) access to and availability of fruits and vegetables in neighborhoods through promotion of farmers markets, community gardens, expanded food options at corner stores and grocery stores, and (3) innovative approaches to promote healthy foods in underserved communities. Methods in use are drawn from epidemiology, ethnography, survey research, and evaluation strategies using a combination of observation, interviews, focus groups, and street intercept surveys.
