Currently, there are a number of South Asian American groups that focus on health, however, little information has been collected and shared regarding data on the number of individuals suffering from chronic and infectious diseases, the number of people that tap into resources such as community-based organizations and the impact community based organizations (CBOs) have on the South Asian community.

The statistical analysis approached for this study was a combination of quantitative and qualitative research using an on-line survey and key informant interviews targeted to the leaders of each CBO.

Thirty-three percent of the survey respondents completed the on-line survey and a 58 percent response rate was attained through key informant interviews. Based on these responses, it is evident that CBOs are a clear venue for SAA populations to better understand key health issues; promote health; and overcome cultural barriers. Additionally, education and outreach are the main mechanisms used to reach this population and collaborating with partners have allowed CBO's to maximize their resources as identified in their mission.

Although CBOs have been successful in educating and allowing the South Asian immigrant population to participate in activities that promote healthy lifestyles; however, have been unable to raise visibility of issues more prominently. The use of media, building partnerships, lack of funding, and overcoming immigrant issues remains a challenge and hinders the ability of leaders to primarily focus on health concerns.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, the participant will be able to…. 1. Understand which overall outreach strategies are more commonly used to reach the immigrant population 2. Describe the successes and overall challenges CBOs face when working with the South Asian immigrant population 3. Identify ways to raise the awareness and visibility of public health programs that focus on the South Asian immigrant population.
