204191 Drinking alcohol during pregnancy in Poland - incidences analysed according to geographical area of residence, education and family status of womenTuesday, November 10, 2009: 1:24 PM
A survey was performed on post-partum women in all 840 hospitals in Poland during one single 24 hour period in obstetrics & neonatal wards. The questionnaire was based on the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) recommended by CDC adapted to Polish conditions. With the aim of being more objective, an additional questionnaire was also undertaken by the treating doctors including additional data from the pregnancy and birth record charts (eg. interview on any previous pregnancies, infant weight, APGAR rating scale, any congenital problems, prematurity, dystrophy etc.). A total of 2300 women took part. Data were analysed statistically according to education, geographical location and family status (eg, single parent, married). The survey demonstrated that alcohol consumption at any time during pregnancy was mainly dependent on women's family status and education with no link to location of residence. The most frequent at-risk behaviour, including drinking, occurred in women either with unplanned pregnancies or in instances of a late diagnosis of pregnancy. Knowledge on the harmful effects of drinking when pregnant was also weak and independent of the studied variables. The authors thereby assert that an educational media campaign be implemented to warn of the dangers of drinking alcohol and smoking during pregnancy. These habits of behaviour are very commonly linked together and don't lend themselves to differentiation between these stimuli in relation to a given hazard.
