Despite the knowledge of health disparities between individuals with disabilities and those without disabilities (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2000), public health programs too infrequently offer preventive care interventions for people with disabilities (L. I. Iezzoni et al., 2000; Wilbur, 2002). In addition, while research has documented the health disparities, little research has described the utilization patterns of preventive screenings and preventive care among individuals with disabilities (Capriotti, 2006; L. I. Iezzoni, McCarthy, E.P., Davis, R.B., Harris- David, L., & O'Day, B., 2001; Mele et al., 2005; Smeltzer, 2006; Thierry, 2000); however preliminary findings from our research indicate poor use of these services despite substantial health disparities. The primary purpose of this session is to provide participants with an understanding of the preventive screening and preventive health care utilization patterns of individuals with physical disabilities supported by Home and Community Based Services waiver in Kansas. The secondary purpose is to suggest methods for increasing the utilization rates for preventive screenings and preventive health services.
Learning Objectives: 1. Describe the need for preventive screening health care programs for people with physical disabilities
2. Describe the utilization patterns of preventive health screenings and services among individuals with physical disabilities.
